It’s pretty fucking hard not to when the GOP keeps trying to make LGBT persons unequal in our constitution, and they keep trying to disenfranchise brown people because they don’t vote the right way, and they keep trying to rally people who are afraid of change around these weirdly violent semi-pastoral ideals that aren’t really relevant anymore and fuel it with fear mongering.

So how about this: Conservatives don’t fucking pull this shit out of their asses, and Liberals won’t throw it back in their faces. Let’s just knock it the fuck off with the whole Nazi thing.

Well, that is exactly what Code Pink’s Medea Benjamin, a FEMALE, did. And would you look at that, Medea is a LADY. Just who does SHE think SHE is? Hint: She is a NOT A MAN.

Now, regardless as to whether you are an Obama supporter or not, or whether or not you think it was OK for her to interrupt the President’s speech, that’s not the issue here. The character of Carol Marcus stripped down to her underwear for no reason in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS. She did it in the same shuttle as Kirk who keeps trying to sneak peeks at the sexy British-accented daughter of Classic Robocop. She does this right after the writers of STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS shit on the legacy of Nurse Chapel, Gene Roddenberry’s wife.

Damon Lindelof went on twitter and apologized for maybe being a misogynist and the Twitter went alight with people writing blog posts about the argument and yelling at each other. One of those people was Devin from BadAssDigest.

Then JJ Abrams went on TV and argued that they also shot this gratuitous Benedict Cumberbatch scene of him showering, it just got cut because he’s not spouting exposition like Carol Marcus was or the movie was to long or the editor or Abrams are sexist pigs.

I guess my issue in this debate continuing is that we’ve picked the wrong movie to make this stink about. AND we’re letting the context the movie put itself in dictate this non-argument.

Is Carol Marcus being in her underwear for no reason kind of unjustifiable? Arguably yes. But I’m not sure that there’s any malice behind it. It’s very possible in my mind that a group of white male writers who don’t seem to much like Star Trek could have put in a sexist scene subconsciously and it wasn’t until someone outside of the controlling group of white men saw it that this became very obvious.

I remember being a little kid and writing a story about a boy my age who found a magical shovel in his back yard that let him dig into a shadow world where he would go on adventures. But, since I was a kid and certain social niceties weren’t baked into me, I did call it a Magic Shovel, I called it “The Spade” and of course, how do you draw a shadow boy if not as a black boy?

You can guess the conversation about race I got to have with my parents after showing them “The Spade.”

I think that’s the conversation we’re having with Abrams and Lindelof now. The: “Hey, this is not okay.”

The thing that is pissing me off about this argument beyond the malice is people trying to use ORIGINAL STAR TREK to justify that this sort of sexism is somehow inherent in the franchise or this is worse because it’s polluting an otherwise innocent franchise that treated women badly as a byproduct of being written in the 60s by men.

It just seems like the two arguments I keep having with people about STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS are:

1. How dare they do this to Star Trek?! It’s so not in the spirit of the original characters in this way and this way and this way and this way.

2. How dare they make Star Trek sexist with that Alice Eve underwear shot for no reason?!

These arguments are contradictory. Because if the movie isn’t STAR TREK to you (and I’d argue it’s not, but an action tent pole franchise movie that has as much in common with its source material as X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE had to Wolverine’s origins), then it’s just another okay-to-shitty tent pole that has a rando underwear shot in it, right after they trash The Original Series by ret-conning Nurse Chapel out of the 5-year mission.

And how can the Alice Eve thing be any worse than having two mostly-naked cat-tailed women? The point is to show Kirk is still a womanizer, but if you cut these two cat-women does that make the Alice Eve shot a character moment like the cat women?

I think we picked the wrong movie to yell at about this, I really do.

If our sexism in entertainment problem is ONE SHOT where the female character is in essentially a bikini for no reason, then we’re in a better place than I thought we were. If there’s still malicious sexism or a movie filled with more subtle misogyny all the way through, that’s the movie we should be yelling at even if it’s not #1 at the box office that week.

Says the guy who just wrote too many paragraphs explaining himself.

The difference between little-kid you with a lack of awareness of racial epithets and historic representation of black characters in visual media and group of white dudes writing sexist things into a blockbuster movie getting massive, world wide exposure is the latter has no excuse. Your mistake was made out of genuine innocence, theirs was made out of either callous disregard, ignorance born of privilege, or both. That’s a huge, huge problem. It doesn’t lessen the offense. The fact that they might be so clueless as to think there was nothing inherently wrong with any part of that scene is as bad as if they specifically crafted it to get the actress into her underoos and portray Kirk as a disrespectful sketchball with no self control.

I mean I can’t talk about the rest of it because I haven’t seen the movie, but that one part of the discussion doesn’t require a deeper familiarity with the film.

A study released today by San Diego State professor Martha Lauzen, as reported by The Wrap, has some pretty distressing statistics about gender equality in the world of film criticism. The study tracked more than 2000 reviews written by authors designated as “Top Critics” on the aggregation service Rotten Tomatoes over the course of several months and found, incredibly, that a whopping 82% were written by men. A similar study conducted in 2007, which tracked reviews written for the top 100 American dailies, found that men accounted for 70% of the material—which suggests not only have the numbers gotten worse, but that, more alarmingly, things are actually worse for female critics online than they were exclusively in print media. Whatever the reasons (or excuses), this is clearly a sorry state of affairs.

There are many great female film critics writing outstanding film criticism every week, and maybe the best thing we can do in response to a study like this is read more. We need more women writing about movies, certainly, but we also need to be more aware of the women who are writing about movies already. Men have a tendency to shout over other people; we don’t need to hear more of that.

With all of this in mind, we thought it would be a good idea to highlight a few of the most essential female critics working today, from some of the most respected names in criticism to less established voices on the rise. If you’re not reading these women already, get on it.

What better way to guarantee the outlets most likely to present a truthful examination of your unscrupulous, manipulative, damaging behavior than to become one of its biggest supporters? Friends close, enemies closer, etc. People in the world with tremendous- I mean truly mind boggling, Koch-level- wealth are not spending it on yachts and private islands and nice watches. They’re translating it into political power. It’s very obvious, but the political system is so deeply entrenched in its ineffective, myopic cycle of winning elections for the sake of winning elections that it doesn’t seem like something that will be stopped or changed any time soon. One of the many reasons I greatly dislike the disdainful, dismissive tone so many people use when talking about the Occupy movement. For all its problems, it was a real moment born out of real outrage at the bald inequality and transparent machinations of huge corporations and the super-wealthy that benefit from them at the expense of everyone else,and I do mean everyone: the government suffers, the citizens of the US suffer, the countries they export all of the US’s once integral manufacturing jobs to and the people that work those jobs in unsafe conditions for next to no money suffer.

These corporations and these one-percenters, these Koch brothers, do not care about religion, or sexuality, or protecting the American worker, or protecting the American small business owner, or making sure the next generation of the American workforce is well educated, or the 2nd Amendment, or any amendment, or the Constitution. They do not care about this country, they do not care about other countries, they do not care about people who are not them. They sure as hell don’t care about the members of the Tea Party. They don’t care about anything- unless it makes them money and secures their position in the world. That’s the bottom line. But they are happy to fund ‘grass roots’ organizations like the Tea Party and campaigns for extreme right wing Republican candidates to keep the discourse on anti-socialism and gay rights and abortion because it distracts people from the fact that their government and their society is rotting, and it’s not unimpeded, rampant socialism that’s doing it.

Suggesting capitalism is bad for a society will get people pissy and up in arms immediately. Hackles raise, people start yelling about disincentives and punishing success and the importance of the small business owner. All those things are true, and are problems, but they are not the fault of some Marxist movement you think has taken hold and they are not true for people like the Kochs. They’re only true for the rest of us. It’s not capitalism, it’s an intense, endless greed that is facilitated by capitalism. The disincentives and unfair tax brackets and inhospitable environment for small business owners are not the fault of the Liberal Free-Money-For-Mooches Machine, they are the fault of people who enjoy a level of wealth and prosperity that you won’t. Ever. EVER. They will make SURE you don’t. They don’t want you to. They don’t want you in their club. So they buy power and people and legislation to make sure the burden stays on everyone else and breeds animosity between groups that are much more closely related than people who think of themselves as middle class or well off are to the 1%. Some people come along who cannot be denied by virtue of some unfathomable accomplishment that came about purely from their exceptional natures- see also, Mark Zuckerberg, like him or not. But that person is probably not you, and that person is definitely not the percentage of people in this country who are working their asses off for increasingly less pay and fewer benefits and are still being saddled with more taxes to take care of the poverty stricken who can’t get jobs because there aren’t any because these gigantic companies who pay no taxes sent those jobs somewhere else. So they could increase their profits without paying back into the system that provided them the opportunity to achieve success in the first place. Sounds mighty leech-y, doesn’t it?

And yeah, no, I’m serious. No market is free enough to get you to their level. Your family? Maybe, if they can keep whatever mind bogglingly successful thing you accomplish going for a few generations. Koch Industries has existed for seventy years and makes about a hundred billion dollars a year. A hundred billion dollars a year.

I mean that’s just a stupid amount of money. Some of it they funnel toward nice things, like the arts and cancer, which is great. But they also funnel it toward people and institutions that want to replace science in schools with religion and that don’t think the arts are worthy of a dime. Anyway, this sucks. Sad to hear PBS is going the way of established news outlets, which is to say spineless. Not that I blame them. When you have to choose between survival or integrity, it’s a lose/lose situation.

Target and DC/Warner Bros. recentlly announced they had teamed up to offer Justice League licensed merchandise this summer. Now there’s plenty of Justice League merchandise already out there, but what got me excited was that Wonder Woman was going to be featured. If you’ve read this blog over the past 3 years you’ll know its been a bit of an issue of mine to see the Justice League turned into an all male team. So yesterday, the day the merchandise was set to debut, I headed off to Target to take a look.

First stop a mega Target north of Boston (conveniently located near a birthday party my son was attending). The result? Oh there was some Justice League merchandise, but unfortunately it was all in Target’s “dollar stop” and featured the quartet of Batman, Superman, Flash and Green Lantern. No Wonder Woman to be seen. But the second visit to my local Target was more successful with several pieces of merchandise. (Sadly I couldn’t find the snack cup (or any dinnerware that was alluded to). So take a look.
